Notes on Process

I usually begin by stating that my work is grounded in symbols and memory. Symbols reside in memory, and are transformed by time and space from facts to something simpler, more universal, and essential. Whether these "facts" are form or shape, color or light, a detachment takes place. This separation gives the image a malleable quality that is more easily shaped by the mind into a metaphor for one's unique experience. In the same way that the truth about an event is framed by the stories we tell about it, the power of an image transcends the facts that were the genesis for its existence.

The world is awash in "information" but images are silent and still, and exist in a different kind of time. This is not limited to time in the most immediate sense, but rather a combination of time, reflection, and memory. All images begin as facts - as information - but each one holds the potential to unlock in us a response that can be surprising, enlightening, troubling, or even simply pleasant. As an artist, one is compelled to put together imagery that reflects one's own experience. Where you, the viewer, take it from there is the real magic in art. The rest is up to you.
